YWAM Australia DTS

YWAM Australia DTS Information

What is a DTS?

The ‘DTS’ is a 6 month course designed to enable you to go deeper in your relationship with God and begin to explore how God wants to use you. Our motto is ‘To know God and to make Him known’. The DTS has two parts; a 3 month ‘lecture phase’ packed with amazing teaching about hearing God, forgiveness, worship, one on one discipleship and community living. Then you pack your bags for the ‘outreach phase’ where you will be given the opportunity to travel and experience a variety of different ministries and develop skills as you continue the process of figuring out what plans God has specifically for you to impact this world for Jesus.

Who is a YWAM Gold Coast DTS for?

Do not worry – you do not have to be some kind of super-Christian with your life in perfect order before you come. We have all kinds of people attend and most come with lots of questions that they need a safe place to wrestle with. Some people come with a suspicion that there is more to God than they are currently experiencing. Some come because they aren’t sure what to do with their lives and the DTS provides a great opportunity to take stock and press into God for his plans. Some come because God seems distant. Some come because they want to explore missions. Some come because they want to travel before school. We pray over every application we receive and we aren’t looking for credentials we are looking for people that are hungry for more of God.

The DTS program is an entry requirement that opens you to a world of opportunities within Youth With A Mission including secondary schools, ministries and staffing.

How much does a YWAM Gold Coast DTS Cost?

The lecture phase costs $4300 AUD and includes lectures, accommodation and food during your school phase. The outreach phase varies depending on the location and availability of flights (this will not be decided until week 4 of your school). It is normally approximately $4000 AUD but could be $6000 AUD

For a breakdown on costing please see the ‘Financial Breakdown’ tab.

When are the YWAM Gold Coast DTS programs?

We rent a number of properties in the local area for student and staff accommodation. This is included in your school fees.

All your meals during the school are included in your School fees including over the weekends. If you have any special dietary requirements please contact the registrar to make sure we can cater for your needs.

We are fortunate to be able to draw on a wealth of guest speakers in our schools, both from within and outside of YWAM.

Worship is the fuel of missions and we love to worship God deeply and passionately both corporately and as individuals. If you have giftings in this area or would like to explore your potential, there will be ample opportunity.

Alongside amazing teaching, you will be allocated your own personal one on one mentor during your DTS to help you process what you are learning and apply it to your life. This is combined with weekly small groups and living in community.

Serving Opportunities

One element of discipleship is taking responsibility for the properties God has given us. We are all allocated different areas of responsibility as opportunities to serve. This includes cleaning the houses, kitchen duties and work around the base. If you have a specialized skill set or interest (like accountancy) make sure you let us know.

Explore your Calling

As part of your experience you will be given a variety of opportunities to explore your giftings and ministry. For example; park outreach, sports events, homeless feeding programs, coffee ministry, friendship evangelism, schools work, Muslim outreach, school leavers evangelism and much more.

We have wi-fi internet connection at the YWAM Centre available for students and staff so you can stay in touch with friends and family.

Track Record

YWAM Gold Coast has existed in this location since 1998 and has been running quality assured schools and training for over 10 years. We are a registered training organization that is Aus-Study approved and accredited.

All of the houses have access to laundry facilities with no charge to use the washing machines. There is a small charge to use the dryer due to electricity costs.

YWAM Gold Coast enjoys a location of one of the top destinations on the planet. Every year millions of tourists from around the world come to enjoy the beaches and surf of Queensland Australia and YWAM uses this as an opportunity to tell the nations about Jesus. The YWAM centre is in Ashmore, a 10 minute drive from Surfers Paradise which is the focus for most of our local evangelism.

We are a 30 minute drive from ‘Coolangatta’ Gold Coast Airport and 60 minutes from Brisbane Airport. We can organize collection from the airport. Please contact the registrar in advance.

Experiencing Australia

You will have ample opportunity to explore Australia while you are here. Students have taken advantage of cheap flights to Sydney and other
destinations during the school. There will be free time at weekends to go to wildlife parks and the beach. There will also be a camping trip and the opportunity to go ‘walk about’ in the Australian Outback visiting aboriginal communities. And yes, you will probably get to see some kangaroos!

As one of the worlds most popular tourist destinations the Gold Coast boasts a wide selection of attractions other than its beaches. Theme parks like Dream world and Movie World, Sea World and Wet N Wild water parks. Due to the climate there are tropical rainforests within driving distance with hiking tracks. You can explore some of Australia’s weird and wonderful wildlife at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary.

Creepy Crawlies

Whilst Australia does boast some of the most poisonous spiders and snakes in the world, we rarely ever get to see them in built up areas – so don’t worry.

Be prepared for extreme heat and wear lots of protection. It can also get pretty cold too so you will need a mixture of clothes.

Unless you hold an Australian passport or have residency you will need to apply for a student visa. We will talk you through that process after you have successfully completed your application form and been accepted.

Non-English speakers

We do accept students who do not speak English as their first language. You will have to demonstrate your English proficiency so that we are confident you will be able to understand the teaching you will be receiving in the school. You need to prove one of the following
a) you have had 3 years of study conducted predominantly in English
b) you have had 3 years of studying English as a foreign language with a pass rate of at least 80%
c) independent testing with a minimum level at or equivalent to : TOEFL: 5.5 or IELTS: 4.5

The base is next to a shopping centre with a supermarket, barbers, bakery, post office, fast food restaurants and a bus stop connecting you to Australia Fair, one of the Gold Coast’s premier shopping malls.

Skate Park

Behind the base is a BMX/skate park for those of you that are so inclined.

We have some of the world’s best waves and our very own surfboards including beginner boards. So once you’ve crammed your head with
learning, let off steam and try a new sport – or just pose for the camera and look cool.

We are a short drive from the local University beach volleyball and basketball courts. We also have access to soccer pitches behind the YWAM Centre and the neighborhood is safe for jogging. We have our own portable beach volleyball sets which we use for evangelism and social activities.

We get a lot of sun so there is a real outdoor lifestyle here. You will need to be careful about harmful rays and purchase strong ‘Australian’ brand sunscreen.

YWAM is a inter-denominational organization but we do strongly encourage church attendance and you will have the opportunity to find a church that suits you.

Outreach Location

The leaders of your school pray about where you will go on the ‘outreach’ phase, but this will not be finalized until around week 3 of your school. On a typical DTS the students and staff will be split into 2 or 3 teams. As a Centre we have a vision for the Asia-Pacific region and have sent teams to Mozambique, Swaziland, Brazil, Peru, Papua New Guinea, India, Indonesia, Fiji, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Vanuatu, Eygpt, Turkey, USA and Nepal.

As we will be spending time in Asia/Pacific, you will need to ensure that you will be covered from the diseases that are easily picked up from being in a place and culture that is not your own. Many of the diseases are able to knock you out for the whole outreach if caution is not taken.

Please ensure that you are up to date with your immunisations before you arrive. (eg Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Polio, Tetanus/Diphtheria, Mantoux – BCG, Cholera, Malaria, Hepatitis B (optional) – please see your doctor for their recommendations).

Because your outreach location will not be finalized until week 3 of your school you will not know if you will need further immunizations. You will be able to get all your injections in Australia but make sure you bring a record of your immunization history. Please note the cost of any extra immunizations you may need are not included in the outreach fees.

What clothes should I bring on outreach?

There are cultural differences in the standards of what is ‘modest’ and what is not. Because we live in a mixed community and will be ministering in various churches and cultures, a high standard of modesty is required. We are not trying to define what is ‘right’ or ‘wrong’, rather we are trying to establish expectations about what works in our cross-cultural community.

• Casual wear – shorts, T-shirts, pants/jeans, dresses or skirts etc.
• Modest “church clothes”
• One nice outfit for outings/events such as ministry times, graduation etc.
• Sweater or jumper
• Windbreaker/ light jacket/ rain jacket
• Hat and sunglasses
• Bathing suit (should be modestly suited to your body shape)
• (Women) Bathing suit cover (needed on outreach if suit is too low or not a one piece) & Boardshorts
• Bed attire
• Walking shoes, sandals, flip flops and good close toed black dress shoes
• Work clothes that can get dirty

All fees are in Australian dollars (AUD). To find out the cost of the course in your currency check out this website: www.xe.com.
