Follow Me

At some point or another, we have all heard certain stories that have now become ‘a classic.’ Stories that never grow old no matter how many times we’ve heard them. If asked upon, we probably could recite one if not a few of these classic stories that have brought people together through time.

Well, there is one particular story from a certain person's life that has always stood out to me among the rest. One man’s life changed the course of history and He did so simply through the act of discipleship. His name was Jesus.

In Matthew 4:18-22, you will find Jesus walking by the Sea of Galilee as he spots two brothers (Simon and Andrew) casting a net into the sea for they were fishermen. For these two brothers, I’m sure it started as a normal day, going out to sea to earn their living. And for Jesus, I wonder if He was excited for what the day had in store, knowing He would be calling the first disciples.

Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Immediately they left their nets and followed him.’

These two brothers were going about their business, their regular life, and one encounter with Jesus caused them to drop their nets and follow Him. And in the verses directly following, you will see the exact same story with two other brothers who were also fishermen. They encountered Jesus and immediately followed Him.

Did they know what ‘Follow Me’ fully entailed? Maybe not. And that is precisely why this story stands out to me among so many more. These normal men took a risk on Jesus simply because they saw something in Him that was worth following. Vice versa, Jesus saw something in these men that were worth taking a risk on and asking them to follow Him.

We are now left with the exact same invitation that Jesus gave to the disciples.

Will you follow Him?
